Basic Trainer Certification
Time: approx. 16 hours
Target: non-professional and professional trainers with little to no experience in classroom instruction and those employees who deliver training courses offered by NMSU Center for Learning & Professional Development.
The NMSU Basic Trainer Certification course is designed to enhance the teaching ability of new and existing trainers. Fundamentals of instructional design, adult learning theory, presentation skills, working from a lesson plan, instructor etiquette and responsibilities are all covered in this course. Technical and non-technical trainers are welcome.
This course is offered as 6 modules covered in 2 online and 3 classroom sessions. Two open lab times are also included to allow for practice time with equipment and new skills. Links to the online modules will be emailed to candidates upon registration.
- Module 1: Basics of Instructional Systems Development (online: required reading prior to attending classroom sessions); approximate time to complete 45 minutes
- Module 2: Introduction to Adult Learning Theory (online required reading prior to attending classroom sessions); approximate time to complete 45 minutes
- Classroom Session 1: 3 hours
- Review/Discuss readings from Module 1 & 2
- Module 3: Preparing to Instruct
- Module 4: Facilitation Tools
- Classroom Session 2: 3 hours
- Module 5: Instruction Skills
- Classroom Session 3: 8 hours
- Module 6: Presentation Exercise
This course is currently offered by invitation only. If you are interested in attending this course, please contact the Center for Learning & Professional Development. Candidates for the Basic Trainer Certification will be required to complete all 6 training modules including a 20 minute, video-taped presentation. Successful course completion will result in the Basic Trainer Certification by NMSU Center for Learning & Professional Development. Trainers will require annual evaluation by NMSU Center for Learning & Professional Development to maintain certification.
