Welcome to Employee Career Development at NMSU
There are approximately 7,000 employees who work for NMSU. Specifically, “73% of millennials believe they need extra skills or advanced training in their professions” (Deshpande et al.,2024). Creating an employee career development plan contributes to employee retention. Additionally, growing employee skills increases performance and production. Although career development is embedded in each of the colleges within the NMSU community, many of their career development initiatives focus on ensuring that graduates are ready for the external workforce. Their partnership often consists of industry leaders who seek to employee our graduates. Unfortunately, these developmental efforts do not always help current NMSU employees. Therefore, there is a need to establish employee career development opportunities.

Why Career Development MattersResearch shows that companies should invest in employee development by providing them with professional development opportunities that contribute to their career success. We need to encourage employees to engage in “proactive skill development” allowing them to take initiative to expand their work- related knowledge (Låstad et al., 2025). This is vital because “informal learning… occurs during critical moments of need embedded in the context of practice” (Deshpande et al.,2024). Additionally, “the continuation of its use will lead to significant outcomes such as career advancement and greater performance” (Deshpande et al.,2024). E-learning plays an important role in driving knowledge that will fit into work tasks and improve work performance while learning (Deshpande et al.,2024).
